302 Hart Senate Office Building

Dear Senator Klobuchar:
Subject: Please Oppose the CEDAW Treaty (H.RES. 22)
Several Members of Congress are encouraging the ratification of a pro-abortion
international treaty. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) claims to promote equality for women
by urging nations to remove barriers in education, employment, marriage,
divorce and other areas.
The treaty is enforced by an unelected U.N. compliance committee that
consistently exceeds its mandate. From reprimanding Belarus for celebrating
Mother's Day to encouraging over thirty countries to liberalize their abortion
laws, the CEDAW committee regularly infringes on national sovereignty.
The domestic legal implications of ratification are even more dire. Despite
the fact that the treaty has never been ratified in the United State, two
Supreme Court Justices have already cited the treaty as justification for
rulings. If the Senate ratifies CEDAW, it will no doubt be used to support
rulings in favor of liberal abortion policy here in America. Any established
protections for women and the unborn will be threatened.
Abortion is a crime against humanity, because it's the taking of an innocent
human life. CEDAW would increase abortions.
I strongly urge you to oppose ratification of this pro-abortion treaty.
Thank you for your consideration of my position on this important issue.
I would appreciate a response to my letter.
Sincerely,

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against
Women (H. RES. 22):
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the Senate should
ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against
Women (CEDAW).
Sponsored by Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and introduced on January
6, 2009, H. Res. 22 is a U.S. House resolution that urges the U.S. Senate
to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women (CEDAW). National Right to Life (NRLC) is opposed to the
ratification of the CEDAW treaty (and thus, opposed to this resolution as
well), because CEDAW has been interpreted by certain U.N. panels and other
international bodies to condemn various pro-life laws.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against
Women (H. RES. 22):
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the Senate should
ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against
Women (CEDAW).
For twenty-five years, the U.S. Senate has refused to ratify this dangerous
treaty. Its provisions are enforced by an unelected U.N. Compliance Committee
who regularly exceeds its mandates to impose on matters of national sovereignty.
The CEDAW committee has criticized Belarus for celebrating Mother's Day.
It has pressured China to legalize prostitution. It has criticized Croatia
and Italy for providing conscience clause protections for doctors opposed
to performing abortions. Most importantly, despite the absence of language
addressing abortion in the actual treaty, the committee has pressured over
thirty-five countries to legalize abortion on demand. The legal consequences
of ratifying this pro-abortion treaty would be monumental. All pro-life
legislation at the state and national levels would be threatened. Progress
made over the last decade to protect the unborn and women would all be rolled
back in the name of the U.N. and CEDAW. Contact your elected officials today,
and urge opposition to this dangerous pro-abortion treaty.

"... While the committee claims neutrality on abortion, the committee has
taken it upon itself to reinterpret this hard-law treaty to include abortion
in the treaty's provision which calls for a right to health. For further
evidence one need look no further than the recently-released CEDAW committee
annual report which details the reviews of 16 countries in 2008. Nine of
those countries were pressed to liberalize or amend their abortion laws.
