Temporary Note: Thank you to all who called or e-mailed their senators re another matter -- Senator Tom Coburn's conscience protection Amendment number 828 to the budget resolution. Unfortunately, the amendment was defeated in a April 2, 2009 vote. Call or e-mail your senators' offices, ask them how they voted on the amendment, and convey your thoughts about that. Call 202-224-3121 to connect with any senator's office or visit http://www.Senate.gov

Even after April 9, 2009, it's still not to late to make a difference on this issue.

Using the below letter or the other sample letters on this issue and the other resources related to it, please put a letter in your own words (or use a sample letter as is), and mail it to your federal House representative and your two federal senators as well as President Obama. It's much better to send a form letter than not to send a letter at all. And, let's flood the White House comments line on this issue.

Also, be sure to send your comments to the Department of Health and Human Services. Again, even after April 9, 2009, it's still not to late to make a difference on this issue.

Note: HHS will make available for public viewing all comments and the personal information (e.g., name and address) included in them.

Dear Senator Klobuchar:

Subject: Please...
- Oppose President Obama's Plan to Rescind the Health Care Providers' Conscience Rule
- Sign the Pro-conscience-rule Letters by Rep. John Fleming, M.D. (R-LA), and Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK)
- Support the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act, ANDA (S. 96)
- Oppose the Protecting Patients and Health Care Act (H.R. 570)

Please support the preservation of the existing Department of Health and Human Services conscience rule. This HHS rule was finalized in January 2009 to clarify, implement, and enforce longstanding conscience laws protecting American health care providers, who have a right to follow their consciences. The rule preserves the rights of health care individuals and entities to refuse to participate in abortion-related activities and other activities that violate their consciences. The clarification that the HHS rule provides is needed so that health care providers know their rights and have recourse to HHS if they are discriminated against for following their consciences.

Unfortunately, on March 6th, the Obama administration formally proposed rescission of this important rule. Please oppose the plan to rescind it.

Abortion is always wrong and should be banned. It isn't health care. It's homicide. Therefore, please do all that you can to protect the conscience rights of health care providers who don't want to commit this homocide and other acts against their consciences. For example, please support the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act (ANDA) and oppose the Protecting Patients and Health Care Act.

In the face of increasing shortages of qualified health care personnel, preservation of the current HHS rule and passage of Congressional acts that protect health care providers' conscience rights would help ensure that pro-life doctors, nurses, and hospitals continue to provide valuable services to needy communities across the nation.

Thank you for your consideration of my position on this important issue.

I would appreciate a response to my letter.

Sincerely,

[Signature]
