Dear Representative Ellison:
Subject: Please Oppose Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Please...
Support the Patients First Act (H.R. 877)
Oppose the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2009 (H.R. 873)
Oppose the Stem Cell Research Improvement Act (H.R. 872)
Please ban all embryonic stem cell research.
Ethically we can do any type of stem cell research involving human tissue
as long as it is not embryonic stem cell research, which always involves
the killing of a living human embryo to obtain that stem cell.
Science tells us that human life begins at the union of sperm and ovum. At
its first cell, a human being has 46 human chromosomes and is a complete,
young person. Killing a living human embryo at day four or five, at week
four or five, or at year four or five is killing a living human.
A frozen embryo is just as much a person as is a fetus in the womb. The only
difference is location, size, age, and degree of development. The embryo
is just a bit younger than the fetus.
We must not say that we can use embryos that will be discarded anyway. We
must not for the same reason that we don't take the organs of a criminal
who will be legally executed, the same reason that we condemned the actions
of the Nazi doctors who used Jewish subjects because they were going to be
killed anyway, the same reason that we don't cannibalize the body of a person
who was killed in an accident. We have respect for human beings and their
bodies, and we must continue to have this respect if we are going to remain
a nation.
There have been marvelous and well-publicized advances in adult stem cell
research -- both in the varied sources of adult stem cells and in the
effectiveness of these cells. No doubt, there is much more to come.
There is a possibility, perhaps a probability, that adult stem cells may
function more efficiently and more safely than embryonic stem cells. And
adult stem cells don't suffer the problem of rejection.
In polls in which people have been informed as to what an embryo is, the
great majority oppose their tax dollars being used in research that involves
human embryos.
No matter what, as we rightly and aggressively conduct research with stem
cells, let us know with certainty that there are some bridges that we in
a civilized society should not cross. We should not deliberately kill one
living human to possibly benefit another. Use stem cells? Yes, but don't
kill to get them.
Sincerely,
[Signature]
Jane Doe
