Support
Patients First Act of 2009 (H.R. 877):
To intensify stem cell research showing evidence of substantial clinical
benefit to patients, and for other purposes.
'To intensify stem cell research showing evidence of substantial clinical
benefit to patients, and for other purposes.'
The Patients First Act, sponsored by pro-life Representatives Randy Forbes
(R-VA 4th) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and supported by NRLC, was introduced
February 4, 2009. It would encourage the National Institutes of Health to
intensify research into methods of obtaining human stem cells for research
and treatment, "prioritizing research with the greatest potential for near-term
clinical benefit in human patients," but without destroying or placing at
risk any human embryos, and without utilizing stem cells that are obtained
by destroying or placing at risk any human embryos.
Summary of H.R. 873
Oppose
Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2009 (H.R. 873):
To amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for human embryonic stem
cell research.
Sponsored by Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO 1st) and introduced February
4, 2009.
Summary of H.R. 872
Oppose
Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009 (H.R. 872):
To amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for human embryonic stem
cell research, to direct the National Institutes of Health to issue guidelines
for such stem cell research, and for other purposes.
Sponsored by Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO 1st) and introduced February
4, 2009.

Doctor Mehmet Oz Tells Oprah's
Audience Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate is Dead
http://lifenews.com/bio2820.html
"... A recent appearance by Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiovascular surgeon at Columbia
University and a regular on Oprah Winfrey's popular eponymous television
program, is generating buzz within pro-life circles. During the program,
Oz told Americans the truth about embryonic stem cell research. ... The comments
are drawing interest because Oz made them in front of the iconic television
personality and embryonic stem cell research advocate Michael J. Fox who
has warped and twisted the positions of pro-life advocates during previous
elections. ..."

"... it is expected that President Obama will begin to push for the federal
funding of embryonic stem cells now that the stimulus bill has been passed.
President Bush signed an executive order on August 9, 2001 that banned the
use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research with the exception
of existing embryos. In other words no new embryos could be created for
destruction. It remains to be seen whether Obama will merely sign an executive
order allowing for the funding of embryonic stem cell research or if he will
try to make the funding more permanent by urging Congress to pass legislation
that would make funding of stem cell research permanent. ..."

"The federal government is moving ahead with drafting the guidelines that
will be put in place once President Barack Obama makes his decision to force
taxpayers to fund embryonic stem cell research. Obama, according to White

"... The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are preparing new guidelines
for funding embryonic stem cell research, which destroys human life at its

on already existing lines of embryonic stem cells, it prohibited the creation
of new stem cell lines. ..."

"... February 16, 2009 ... A top advisor to President Barack Obama confirmed
again that the president will soon be issuing an executive order to lift
the limits President Bush put in place on embryonic stem cell research. ...

Guarantees Funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
http://www.lifenews.com/bio2731.html
"... During a meeting with leading Congressional Democrats on Thursday [February
5, 2009], President Barack Obama guaranteed he will sign an executive order
forcing taxpayers to fund embryonic stem cell research. That's the unproven
science that involves the destruction of days-old unborn children. ... Obama
previously indicated in a CNN interview that he would perhaps not sign the
order but wait for Congress to send him a bill that would do so. Now, he
says he will sign the order. ... 'I guarantee you that we will sign an executive
order for stem cells,' he said ..."
Adult Stem Cell Research
Trials Could Reduce Need for Heart Transplants
http://www.lifenews.com/bio2749.html
"... Adult stem cells have been used for years to repair heart damage in
patients, but scientists at London's King's College Hospital are hoping that
a pioneering treatment could take them to the next level. The treatment involves
taking a patient's own stem cells and growing them in a lab setting. The
bone marrow cells are turned into human heart stem cells and then injected
into the heart to repair damage. ... The adult stem cells overcome one of
the primary problems associated with embryonic stem cells -- that they are
rejected by a patient's immune system. ..."
