The Honorable Amy Klobuchar [This legislator is used just as an example for formatting.]
302 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington DC 20510-2305

Dear Senator Klobuchar:

Subject: Please Oppose United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Funding and Omnibus Bill H.R. 1105, Which Would Fund UNFPA

Please oppose funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because of its participation in human rights violations. Because of UNFPA's participation in China's one-child policy, I urge you to oppose any legislation that would financially support UNFPA.

This policy results in coercive abortions and sterilizations; unwilling pregnant women are dragged into hospitals and forced to undergo a surgical procedure to which they do not consent. This is barbaric and inhumane. While I believe that abortion is always wrong because it deprives a whole class of persons equal protection, UNFPA's involvement in crimes goes beyond the abortion debate.

No matter what your opinion about family planning and abortion, please take a good look at this issue. UNFPA claims to help women. But when it participates in programs like China's one-child policy, it is destroying women's lives and stealing away their free will.

Omnibus bill H.R. 1105 not only would restore funding to the United Nations Population Fund, but its language is such that the president or his administration would not be required to sign off on the funding and make sure the UNFPA is not violating the Kemp-Kasten law, which forbids funding groups involved in forced abortions.

Thank you for your consideration of my position on this important issue.

I would appreciate a response to my letter.

Sincerely,

Oppose UNFPA
Say NO to U.S. tax dollars paying for forced abortions in China

January 2009: Appended to the statement announcing the end of the Mexico City Policy, President Obama said: "In addition, I look forward to working with Congress to restore U.S. financial support for the U.N. Population Fund."

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) actively participates in China's one-child policy. An urban household is allowed only one child; a rural household, two. Forced or coercive abortions are commonplace as late as seven to nine months gestation. In late June 2008, the White House released a statement clarifying and confirming their position on withholding funds from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). They explained that they were upholding the Kemp-Kasten provision which declares no funds "...may be made available to any organization or program, which, as determined by the President of the United States, supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization." Now Congress wants to strip Kemp-Kasten from the bill in order to fund UNFPA. That means your tax dollars would be used to make women undergo unwanted abortions. This is more than abortion; this is a violation of human rights and must not be funded by U.S. taxpayers.    Back to menu

Democrats Shut Down Pro-Life Move to Stop UNFPA-Forced Abortion Funding
http://www.lifenews.com/int1100.html
"... the appropriations bill Congressional Democrats put forward to fund the federal government through the end of the years [omnibus bill H.R. 1105] restores funding to the United Nations Population Fund. ... Every year during his presidency, President Bush withheld tens of millions in taxpayer funds from the UNFPA, but Congressional Democrats, with a friend in Barack Obama in the White House, have restored the funds. ... ACTION: Contact your members of Congress and urge them to oppose funding the UNFPA and its pro-abortion activities. ... Ask them to oppose HR 1105 because of it."

Pro-life Amendments Blocked in Congress

"... UNFPA will be given $50 million from today's Omnibus bill. Congressman Smith also reprimanded the Democratic leaders for neglecting the human rights abuses against 'Chinese women, children and the family.' 'So, how does Congress respond to the UNFPA's complicity in China's crimes against women?' Smith asked. 'Do we demand reform and protection of Chinese women and children? Heck no. We gut the anti-coercion law and write a $50 million check to the UNFPA,' Smith said, deriding the Omnibus allocation."

Congressional Democrats Seek to Restore, Increase Funding to Pro-Abortion UNFPA
http://www.lifenews.com/int1097.html
"... The omnibus bill adds language that makes it so the president or his administration is not required to sign off on the funding and make sure the UNFPA is not violating the Kemp-Kasten law which forbids funding groups involved in forced abortions. ... It is so broadly worded that the UNFPA will receive funding notwithstanding the operation of any provision of law. As a result, even if the UNFPA were to violate provisions of law unrelated to abortion, it would still receive funding. ..."

Potential Obama Move to Fund UNFPA Renews China Forced Abortion Debate
http://www.lifenews.com/int1092.html
"... The UNFPA promotes family planning efforts in 140 countries, but, in China, it shares offices and works hand in hand with the same officials who force women to have abortions and men to be sterilized. The Chinese authorities also subject violators of the one-child rule to job losses, imprisonment, house arrest and other human rights abuses. ..."

Obama Promises to Fund Coercive China One-Child Policy Collaborator UNFPA
http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/jan/09012609.html
"WASHINGTON, D.C., January 26, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Following on the heels of the elimination of the Mexico City Policy, President Obama has confirmed that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which helped instigate, perpetuate and enforce China's coercive one-child policy, will again receive taxpayer dollars. ..."

UNFPA Supports Coercive Family Planning-Including Forced Abortion-in China
http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2001/oct/011005c.html
"... Stung by earlier criticism of its complicity in China's one-child policy, the UNFPA is at pains to disavow any connection with targets and quotas, coercion or abortion. ... Population Research Institute decided to investigate whether the UNFPA's sweeping claims about its support and management of family planning programs in China were true. ... PRI believes that, despite UNFPA claims to the contrary, there is no real distinction between the one-child policy as carried out in the 32 counties where the UNFPA is active and the one-child policy found throughout China as a whole. We believe that the evidence is conclusive: The UNFPA, contrary to its own statements, is participating in the management and support of a program of forced abortion and forced sterilization in China, and should therefore be ineligible for US funds. ..."

Beyond Mexico City
http://amywelborn.wordpress.com/2009/01/24/beyond-mexico-city/
"... This action could be even more monstrous than the reversal of the Mexico City Policy. The U.S. government ceased funding the UNFPA after independent investigations found the agency complicit in China's coercive one-child policy - coercion that includes forced abortions. ... UNFPA funding has been withheld for that reason since 2002 and the State Department continued to monitor China's coercive 'family planning' regime."

UNFPA May Get Obama Administration Funding, But Overpopulation Still Mythical
http://www.lifenews.com/int1099.html
"... Only economic growth and freedom, not deceitful population programs from the UNFPA, can empower women and spare them poverty and premature death."

"The Obama Administration has once again confirmed their support for the abortion industry by asking Congress for $50 million for the controversial UNFPA. ...
