Introduction
Anyone, feel free to order, print, copy, or make your own postcards like
the ones below and mail them to your elected officials at any time. Feel
free to pass on the word about the campaign or any of the materials and to
distribute them in any way.
The "Fight FOCA Postcard Campaign" is sponsored by the U.S. Bishops' Pro-life
Office and its sister organization the National Committee for a Human Life
Amendment. Postcards opposing FOCA will be distributed, signed, and
collected in parishes and churches across the U.S. The target day for this
event is the weekend of January 24-25, 2009, though your diocese or parish
may set a different weekend.
At their November 2008 meeting, the U.S. Bishops voted unanimously to call
us to prayer and action to prevent passage of the "Freedom of Choice Act"
and to oppose other attempts to overturn existing pro-life laws and policies.
Congress could try to dismantle existing pro-life policies and laws wholesale
through FOCA, or it could try to eliminate them one at a time. In any event,
it is critical that pro-life Americans send a strong and immediate message
against such attacks on defenseless human life.

Letter from Cardinal
Justin Rigali, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urging
Member of Congress to "pledge their opposition to FOCA", Sept. 19,
2008
http://www.usccb.org/prolife/FOCArigaliltr.pdf
Printable. "... The operative language of FOCA is twofold. First it creates
a 'fundamental right' to abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy,
including a right to abort a fully developed child in the final weeks for
undefined 'health' reasons. No government body at any level would be able
to 'deny or interfere with' this newly created federal right. Second, it
forbids government at all levels to 'discriminate' against the exercise of
this right 'in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services,
or information.' For the first time, abortion on demand would be a national
entitlement that government must condone and promote in all public programs
affecting pregnant women. ..."

Expected for January 24 to Stop Abortion Bill
http://www.lifenews.com/nb169.html
"... Robert J. Hermann of the Archdiocese of St. Louis talked about the effort
to get members of Congress to oppose the bill. 'FOCA is the most radical
pro-abortion legislation that has ever been promoted, and therefore, it is
very important that every Catholic inform their public representatives that
we cannot tolerate legislation that will intensify the destruction of our
children,' he said. FOCA 'is more radical than Roe vs. Wade because it will
not allow anyone -- the government, doctors, parents -- to interfere with
the so-called 'right' to an abortion,' Christina Heddell, director of the
Respect Life Apostolate, told the St. Louis Review. 'It is imperative that
the Church send a clear message to the elected officials in Washington that
we do not want women and their unborn children to suffer under FOCA or any
related measure that promotes procured abortion.'"
Bishop: Anti-FOCA Postcard
Campaign Fulfills Christian Duty to Oppose Abortion
http://www.lifenews.com/nat4751.html
"Congress will soon receive millions of postcards from pro-life Americans
across the country opposed to the FOCA bill. ... 'See your signature on your
postcard as your moral response to the words of Jesus that we will all hear
on the day of our personal judgment, "I assure you, as often as you did it
for one of my least brothers and sisters, you did it for me,"' McManus says.
The bishop tells the Catholic Free Press that FOCA must be strongly opposed
because it would destroy decades of work pro-life advocates have done to
limit abortions until the day comes human life is fully protected. ..."
