Pass It On: A Message You Can Send to Others

I wrote this before the November 4, 2008, election:

Feel free to use any or all of this message as your own.

Dear _____________,           Subj: From __________ -- On voting according to truth

Hi. This is an e-mail that I'm sending to my family members and friends, including you. Please feel free to pass it on or to use any or all of it as your own.

************************
Dear loved ones,

I write to you in love because I know that you want to do what is right and because, while each one of us has the responsibility to act according to his conscience, it is equally the responsibility of each of us to form his conscience according to the truth.

Following my signature in this e-mail is a synopsis of a document that gives great clarity regarding the primacy of the abortion issue in the upcoming election. The piece would be about 1 1/2 pages if you printed it.

Just above my signature in this e-mail are two links: one to an interesting and helpful online video; the other, to a web page with more clarifying resources.

Some of you are Catholic; some of you are not. However I wish to appeal to any of you who are planning to vote for Obama to reconsider because of life issues; most notably, the abortion issue.

In the United States alone, about 4,000 children are intentionally killed in their mothers' wombs every day.

Over 48 million people have been killed by intentional abortion in the U.S. since Roe vs. Wade, in 1973.

This is an atrocity. Please don't be among those who are closing their eyes to the killing of the unborn and the harm it also does to their mothers and fathers and all involved.

You may or may not be aware of the fact that Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of president of the United States. Many people actually think that he's pro-life. He is, in fact, the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in history. Obama opposes the Hyde Amendment, the Mexico City Policy (against funding abortion abroad), parental consent and notification laws, conscience protections, and the funding of alternatives to embryo-destructive research. He supports Roe v. Wade, the Freedom of Choice Act, partial-birth abortion, and human cloning and embryo-killing. As an Illinois state senator, Obama opposed legislation to protect children who are born alive, either as a result of an abortionist's unsuccessful effort to kill them in the womb or by the deliberate delivery of the baby prior to viability. (Not to mention other anti-family policies Obama supports.)

On the other hand, John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned. Especially because the president has so much control over Supreme Court appointments and because Supreme Court judges are appointed for life, the next president of the United States will shape the fabric of the culture, dramatically, for a very long time. (At the site linked below, there are more details about Obama's pro-abortion extremism and the Supreme Court issue.)

Even if you don't believe in God, please understand that killing goes against natural law. The more we live according to natural law, the more peace and joy we will have.

"A nation that kills its own children is a nation without hope." -- Pope John Paul II

Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want ... the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child ... The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion and an inconvenience. -- Quotes by Mother Teresa of Calcutta

"The human being must be respected -- as a person -- from the very first instant of his existence." -- The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Instruction on Respect for Human Life in Its Origin and on the Dignity of procreation: Replies to Certain Questions of the Day

Remember, you were once that age. Every good thing that you want for your loved ones, for our country, and for the world would be better supported and accomplished in a climate of such respect for the dignity of every person.

Your vote counts. It's your responsibility and privilege to vote. Very rarely has a man been elected president who didn't win the popular vote as well as the electoral vote. In some states (including Minnesota) you can register right before you vote. Call the Voter Hotline -- 1-866-687-8683 -- to find out what ID you need to provide. Probably you'll need to provide just one of the following: 1) a driver's license; 2) photo ID and utility bill; or 3) a voucher --someone registered to vote in your precinct who can swear that you live there. Ask about absentee voting if you're going to be away on election day.

You don't have to like McCain very much to be a part of the healing of our world's worst cancer. If you have any doubt, any doubt at all, please err on the side of life. Please make your vote count for life.

I very much want you to please take a look at the following web pages. They will help you become even more prepared for this extremely important presidential election:

Texas Bishops Resolve Doubts for Faithful Citizens

DALLAS, Texas, OCT. 22, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Voting for a pro-abortion candidate when there is an alternative option is to cooperate in evil, and therefore morally impermissible, clarified two Texas bishops.

In a message made available to the faithful during this Respect Life month, bishops Kevin Farrell of Dallas and Kevin Vann of Fort Worth seek to "dispel any confusion or misunderstanding that may be present among you concerning the teaching contained in" the U.S. bishops document on faithful citizenship.

"'Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship' clearly teaches that not all issues have the same moral equivalence," the bishops explained. "Some issues involve 'intrinsic evils'; that is, they can never under any circumstance or condition be morally justified. Preeminent among these intrinsic evils are legalized abortion, the promotion of same-sex unions and 'marriages,' repression of religious liberty, as well as public policies permitting euthanasia, racial discrimination or destructive human embryonic stem cell research."

Thus, bishops Farrell and Vann stated, "we cannot make more clear the seriousness of the overriding issue of abortion -- while not the 'only issue'-- it is the defining moral issue, not only today, but of the last 35 years. [...] This electoral cycle affords us an opportunity to promote the culture of life in our nation.

"As Catholics we are morally obligated to pray, to act and to vote to abolish the evil of abortion in America, limiting it as much as we can until it is finally abolished."

Not enough

The prelates acknowledged that there are a number of important issues voters must consider "such as immigration reform, health care, the economy and its solvency, care and concern for the poor, and the war on terror."

"As Catholics we must be concerned about these issues and work to see that just solutions are brought about," they wrote. "There are many possible solutions to these issues and there can be reasonable debate among Catholics on how to best approach and solve them. These are matters of 'prudential judgment.'"

"But," the prelates emphasized, "let us be clear: Issues of prudential judgment are not morally equivalent to issues involving intrinsic evils. No matter how right a given candidate is on any of these issues, it does not outweigh a candidate's unacceptable position in favor of an intrinsic evil such as abortion or the protection of 'abortion rights.'"

Salvation at stake

The Texas bishops, citing the U.S. episcopal conference document, addressed the question of if it is "permissible for a Catholic to vote for a candidate who supports an intrinsic evil -- even when the voter does not agree with the candidate's position on that evil."

They said there are only two conditions when voting for a pro-abortion candidate is permissible:

"A. If both candidates running for office support abortion or 'abortion rights,' a Catholic would be forced to then look at the other important issues and through their vote try to limit the evil done; or,"

"B. If another intrinsic evil outweighs the evil of abortion. While this is sound moral reasoning, there are no 'truly grave moral' or 'proportionate' reasons, singularly or combined, that could outweigh the millions of innocent human lives that are directly killed by legal abortion each year."

"To vote for a candidate who supports the intrinsic evil of abortion or 'abortion rights' when there is a morally acceptable alternative would be to cooperate in the evil -- and, therefore, morally impermissible."

The bishops concluded affirming that the decisions made on such political and moral issues "may affect each individual's salvation."

"As Catholics, we must treat our political choices with appropriate moral gravity," they wrote, "and in doing so, realize our continuing and unavoidable obligation to be a voice for the voiceless unborn, whose destruction by legal abortion is the preeminent intrinsic evil of our day."
