How to Copy or Move Files and Folders in Windows Explorer

To copy or move files and folders, do the following:

  1. Open Windows Explorer by doing the following (unless you have a more-convenient shortcut to it elsewhere):

    1. Click on Start;

    2. Go to All Programs (or Programs);

    3. Click on Windows Explorer (It may be directly on the All Programs menu or it may be under Accessories or under one of the categories under Accessories.

      Tip: If you want to create a new folder into which you will copy or move files or folders, do the following:

      1. In the left pane of Windows Explorer, browse to the folder into which you want to create a new folder;

      2. In the left pane of Windows Explorer, click on the folder (to open the folder) into which you want to create a new folder;

      3. In the right pane of Windows Explorer, right-click in a blank area;

      4. In the pop-up menu that appears, go to New;

      5. In the new pop-up menu that appears, click on Folder;

      6. When the new folder appears, and you see the blinking, highlighted words New Folder, type in a name for the folder. (If you miss that chance to rename the new folder, right click on the new folder, and select Rename).

  2. In the left pane of Windows Explorer, browse to the files or folders that you want to copy or move until you see them in the right pane;

  3. In the right pane of Windows Explorer, highlight the files or folders that you want to copy or move by doing either one of the following (whichever works, depending on your computer's settings):

    • Hover over a file or folder;
    • Or, click on a file or folder if that highlights it without opening it.

      Tip: To select more than one item for copying or moving all at once, do one of the following:

      • Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and select the files or folders one by one;

      • Or, while holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, select the first item that you want to copy or move, then select the last item that you want to copy or move. Now, automatically, all the items in between will also be selected.

  4. While right-clicking on the selected items, drag them to the folder in the left pane into which you want to copy or move the items;

  5. When the folder to which you want to copy or move the items becomes highlighted, release your right-click;

  6. In the pop-up menu that appears, click on either Copy Here or Move Here.
