Burning Video DVDs with Nero
To use Nero to burn a DVD-Video (a DVD that is likely to work in your DVD
player), do the following:
-
Insert a DVD-R in your computer's disc drive (other types of DVDs may also
work, but DVD-R discs play in more external players than do any other disc
types);
-
Open Nero StartSmart;
-
In the Applications list, click on Nero Vision;
-
Go to Make DVD;
-
Click on DVD-Video;
-
Whenever a Tips dialogue box pop ups, you may read it, or set the
options for how often the Tips box will pop up, or just close it.
When you're through with the Tips dialogue box, close it.
-
In the right pane, click on Add Video Files;
-
In the Open dialogue box, browse to the video(s) that you want to
burn onto a DVD;
-
Select the file(s) that you want to burn (to select multiple files, hold
down the Ctrl key on your keyboard; or to select all, first
select one file, and then use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl +
a; that is, on your keyboard, press the a key
while holding down the Ctrl key);
-
Click on the Open button;
-
Notice, in the lower-right corner, where you see Total space used,
a bar that shows how much disc space is used so far and how much disc space
is free. If you see a full-o-meter there, which indicates that
you added more videos than can fit on the DVD, do the following:
-
In the left pane, select a video to highlight it;
-
Right-click on the highlighted video;
-
Click on Delete;
-
Delete more videos, if necessary, until your compilation will fit on the
DVD;
-
If you want to add any more videos, repeat the last five steps above (starting
with click on Add Video Files);
-
Click on the Next button;
-
If a Nero Vision dialogue box pops up telling you that you can download
menu templates from a Nero page, you may click on the link to get those
templates, or you may checkmark the box Never display this message
again, or you may click on the OK button to close the box;
-
Optional: you can customize your your disc menu in several ways:
-
To change the disc-menu heading, in the ...Project... > Select
Menu dialogue box, type a new disc-menu header in the Header slot
(you can also change the header in the Edit Menu dialogue box; see
next item);
-
To change the title of a video clip, click anywhere on the disc menu (the
dialogue box changes to the ...Project... > Edit Menu dialogue
box), and do the following:
-
Click on the video clip to select it;
-
Right-click on the selected video clip;
-
Click on Properties;
-
In the Text slot, type in the text that you want;
-
Click on the OK Button.
-
To customize the disc menu further, in the right pane of the ...Project...
> Edit Menu dialogue box, hover over Layout,
Background, Buttons, Font, Header/Footer Text,
Shadow, Automatization, and Interactive Colors to see
the options.
-
When you're ready, click on the Next button;
-
In the ...Project... > Preview dialogue box, if the preview
looks OK to you, click on the Next button;
-
In general, if you get the following message and if you live in the United
States, just click the No button, because NTSC is standard in the
United states, and PAL is standard elsewhere:
Your project contains more PAL than NTSC material, but will be encoded
in NTSC if you use the current settings. Do you want to change the settings
to PAL, so that your project will be encoded in the video mode that matches
the majority of the project's contents?
-
In the Burn Options dialogue box, click on the Burn button;
-
When the burn process is completed, probably the DVD will be ejected and
you'll see the following message: Burn process completed successfully.
Would you like to save the log file? Click on the Yes button or
the No button.
-
Click on the Exit button or click on the X in the upper-right corner.
-
When you're asked if you want to save your project, click on the Yes
button or the No button depending on whether you think that sometime
you might want to burn another DVD of the same or a similar compilation and
with the same or a similar menu and whether you think that it would be easier,
at that time, to work with a project with this particular compilation and
menu than it would be to create a new compilation and menu. Saying No
to saving your project does not mean that any of your video files will be
deleted from your hard drive.
-
If Nero StartSmart opens, close it by clicking on the X in the upper-right
corner.
