Getting Nero and Burning Video DVDs with Nero

Warning: You'll Probably Be Sorry if You Don't Uncheck These Boxes During the Nero Installation Process

Many programs ask you, during the installation process, whether you want to associate certain file types with the program. Nero asks that too, but in Nero, you have to uncheck boxes; otherwise, the file types will be associated with Nero. Nero is well worth having, but if you don't uncheck the boxes below during the installation process, you'll find (after the installation) that flaming, orange or red Nero icons will replace the file-type icons for many files types that you have on your computer. I seriously suggest that you won't be happy if that happens, and I think that even uninstalling Nero won't set things aright. But if you follow the instructions below, you won't get any unwanted Nero icons/file associations.

So, when the installation process brings you to a page that asks you if you want Nero to be the default program or player to open the file types listed, do the following two things:

  1. Uncheck all the checkmarks under each of the three or four tabs Photos, Video, and Music (and Previews if there is a Previews tab). Be sure to click on each of those tabs to see the checkmarked boxes under each. There may be a button to uncheck at once all of the checkmarks under a given tab.

  2. You can leave the checkmarks under the Options tab.
