Burning Video DVDs with Roxio/Sonic

These are the main things that I've learned about burning video DVDs (DVD-Video) with the Sonic/Roxio software that came on my computer. The OEM software that I have is no longer available, but the current Roxio product that does all of the things that mine does is Roxio Creator 2009, which is available at http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/suite/overview.html

My OEM software is called Sonic MyDVD Plus 7 or Sonic DigitalMedia Plus version 7. Probably most of the instructions on this page apply to most Sonic or Roxio software that burns DVD-Video. (Roxio and Sonic are partnered now. Roxio has consumer-based products; Sonic has professional products now.)

To use Roxio or Sonic to burn a DVD-Video (a DVD that is likely to work in your DVD player), do the following:

  1. Insert a DVD-R in your computer's disc drive (other types of DVDs may also work, but DVD-R discs play in more external players than do any other disc types);

  2. Open MyDVD or DigitalMedia Plus, or whatever Sonic or Roxio DVD-burning software you may have;

  3. In the left menu, click on the Video button;

  4. Click on Create Project;

  5. Under Create Project, click on DVD;

  6. In the Untitled (DVD-Video) dialogue box, click on Add Files;

  7. In the Add Movie Files to Menu dialogue box, browse to the video(s) that you want to burn onto a DVD;

  8. Select the file(s) that you want to burn (to select multiple files, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard; or to select all, first select one file, and then use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + a; that is, on your keyboard, press the a key while holding down the Ctrl key);

  9. Click on the Open button;

  10. Notice, in the lower-right corner, a disc icon that shows how much disc space is used so far and how much disc space is free. If that disc icon becomes completely filled and if the Burn button has an exclamation point on it, which indicates that you added more videos than can fit on the DVD, do the following:

    1. In the left pane, select a video to highlight it;
    2. Right-click on the highlighted video;
    3. Click on Delete;
    4. Delete more videos, if necessary, until your compilation will fit on the DVD;

  11. If you want to add any more videos, repeat the last five steps above (starting with click on Add Files);

  12. Optional: you can customize your disc menu in several ways:

    • To change the disc-menu heading, click on Click here to change text;
    • To change the title of a video clip, click on the text under the clip's button;
    • To customize the disc menu further, in the right pane, under Project Tasks, click on Edit Style;

  13. When you're ready, click on the Burn button;

  14. If prompted that you must save your project, do the following:

    1. click on the Yes button;
    2. In the Save Project As dialogue box, use the default location and file name or browse to a location of your choice and enter a file name in the File name slot;
    3. Click on the Save button.

  15. In the Disc Recorder Information dialogue box, click on the OK button;

  16. When the burn process is completed, probably the DVD will be ejected. When the burn process is completed, click on the Next button, if there is one, until there aren't any more Next buttons to click on, and then click on the X in the upper-right corner to close the remaining window;

  17. When you're asked if you want to save your project, click on the Yes button or the No button depending on whether you think that sometime you might want to burn another DVD of the same or a similar compilation and with the same or a similar menu and whether you think that it would be easier, at that time, to work with a project with this particular compilation and menu than it would be to create a new compilation and menu. Saying No to saving your project does not mean that any of your video files will be deleted from your hard drive.    Back to menu

Multisession Option in Roxio/Sonic

Multisession (or multisessioning) is a term for being able to add more to a disc later. A multisession disc is a disc burned in more than one or several successive sessions. You don't need to use a rewritable disc in order to multisession.

I'm quite sure that the following is true with most disc-burning software:

  • You can burn multisession data CDs and data DVDs;
  • You can't burn multisession audio CDs;
  • You can't burn multisession video DVDs (DVD-Video).

To be able to multisession in Roxio or Sonic, do the following:

  1. Open MyDVD or DigitalMedia Plus, or whatever Sonic or Roxio DVD-burning software you may have;
  2. In the left menu, click on the Data button;
  3. Click on Tools;
  4. Click on Options;
  5. Select I would like to use discs for more than one recording ...;
  6. Click on the OK button.    Back to menu

The above setting should remain unless you manually change it.
