Software Download Tips

I recommend that you create a folder on your Desktop or in My Documents and name it Downloaded Software. Inside of that folder, create a new folder for each program that you download. If you download more than one version of a program, create a separate folder for each version.

If you purchase software, in order to get free future downloads or updates to which you may be entitled, be sure to keep your proof of purchase as well as your registration key (serial number).

In case you think that you wouldn't purchase software unless you could purchase a disc rather than a download, I'd like to share the reasons that I usually prefer to purchase a download rather than a disc:

  • A disc can break or become corrupted, and sometimes providers don't replace discs free of charge;

  • Sometimes when you purchase a disc, you're not entitled to free downloads as well;

  • Usually if you purchase a download, you're entitled to free downloads indefinitely (check with the provider);

  • You can usually make your own back-up disc by burning your downloaded executable file to a date DVD.
