Caution and Benefits

Use CCleaner at your own risk. I, like many users, have never had any problem as a result of running CCleaner and like it very much, but I have to caution that some users say that clean-up utilities and registry optimizers can remove files and registry entries that shouldn't be removed. I had this help page at my site in the past, and then I took it down when I thought that CCleaner might have caused a problem with one of my programs. When it turned out that CCleaner hadn't caused any problem, and after I started using CCleaner again to great advantage, I decided to share this page again. Just before I put this page back up, a free link checker -- Xenu's Link Sleuth, http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html -- didn't work right (Xenu was checking an old version of my site) until I ran CCleaner. As soon as I ran CCleaner, Xenu worked.

CCleaner does not scan for or remove malware. It's not anti-virus or anti-spyware software. It's a free utility that you can use anytime to quickly remove unnecessary files from your computer and fix issues in (optimize) your registry. If you use CCleaner before you remove malware from your computer,  probably there will be fewer tracking cookies for the anti-malware utilities to find and less volume for them to scan. If you use CCleaner after malware is removed from your computer, it will remove the bad registry entries and files that are left over from the infection. CCleaner usually takes from a few seconds to a few minutes to run, but it might take a little longer.

How to Run CCleaner

To run CCleaner, do the following:

  1. Open CCleaner;

  2. Click on Cleaner (it may be selected by default);

  3. You can leave all of the default checkmarks under the Windows tab and the Applications tab, but if you don't want your Internet History cleared, just uncheck the box next to History (when you clear your Internet History, which I do from time to time, hyperlinks that you've recently clicked on appear as unvisited links rather than as visited links; for example blue instead of purple);

  4. Click on the Run Cleaner button;

  5. When you're asked Are you sure you wish to proceed?, click on the OK button;

  6. When the Cleaner has completed, Click on Registry;

  7. Remove the checkmark from Run At Startup;

  8. Click on the Scan for Issues button;

  9. When the scan is complete, click on the Fix selected issues button;

  10. Whey you're asked Do you want to backup changes to the registry?, click on the Yes button;

  11. In the Save As dialogue box, click on the Save button (a backup of the registry will be placed on your desktop; you can delete that backup after a couple weeks or so, after it seems that everything works fine on your computer);

  12. In the next dialogue box, click on the Fix All Selected Issues button;

  13. When you're asked Are you sure you want to Fix all selected Issues?, click on the OK button;

  14. Close CCleaner by clicking on the X in the upper-right corner.    Back to menu
