Caution and BenefitsUse CCleaner at your own risk. I, like many users, have never had any problem as a result of running CCleaner and like it very much, but I have to caution that some users say that clean-up utilities and registry optimizers can remove files and registry entries that shouldn't be removed. I had this help page at my site in the past, and then I took it down when I thought that CCleaner might have caused a problem with one of my programs. When it turned out that CCleaner hadn't caused any problem, and after I started using CCleaner again to great advantage, I decided to share this page again. Just before I put this page back up, a free link checker -- Xenu's Link Sleuth, http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html -- didn't work right (Xenu was checking an old version of my site) until I ran CCleaner. As soon as I ran CCleaner, Xenu worked. CCleaner does not scan for or remove malware. It's not anti-virus or anti-spyware software. It's a free utility that you can use anytime to quickly remove unnecessary files from your computer and fix issues in (optimize) your registry. If you use CCleaner before you remove malware from your computer, probably there will be fewer tracking cookies for the anti-malware utilities to find and less volume for them to scan. If you use CCleaner after malware is removed from your computer, it will remove the bad registry entries and files that are left over from the infection. CCleaner usually takes from a few seconds to a few minutes to run, but it might take a little longer.
