Step 3: Run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition is a good free utility that you can open anytime you want and use to scan for malware on your computer and to remove any malware found.

Installation Tips: Options at the End of Installation 

At the end of the installation process, after you click on the Finish, do the following (every step may not be included here, but the important ones are):

  1. When you're asked Would you like SUPERAntiSpyware to check for the latest rules and definition updates now? Click on the Yes button.

  2. A setup wizard will appear;

  3. Click on the Next button;

  4. You don't have to enter any email address;

  5. Click on the Next button;

  6. Make sure that there's is a checkmark next to Automatic Update Checking;

  7. Click on the Next button;

  8. Uncheck Send a diagnostic report to our research center;

  9. Click on the Finish button;

  10. In the Protect Home Page dialogue box, do the following:

    1. Uncheck the box next to Display a notification window when home page changed (recommended);

    2. Click on the Do NOT Protect button.    Back to menu


Setup to Do Before Your First Scan

Do the following setup before doing your first scan:

  1. Open SUPERAntiSpyware;

  2. Click on the Preferences button (you'll be in the SUPERAntiSpyware Control Center dialogue box);

  3. Click on the General and Startup tab;

  4. In the Start-Up Options area, do the following (the other default options are OK):

    1. Uncheck the box next to Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows Starts;

    2. Uncheck the box next to Show SUPERAntiSpyware icon in system tray;

    3. Uncheck the box next to Show splash screen on startup;

  5. In the Start-Up Scanning area, select Do not scan when SUPERAntiSpyware starts;

  6. Click on the Scanning Control tab,

  7. In the Scanner Options area, do the following (the other default options are OK):

    1. Uncheck the box next to Ignore files larger than 4MB (recommended);

    2. Uncheck the box next to Ignore non-executable files (recommended);

    3. Uncheck the box next to Scan only known file types (*.exe, *.com, *.dll, etc.);

    4. Uncheck the box next to Display scan option in Explorer context (right-click) menu;

    5. Checkmark the box next to Terminate memory threats before quarantining;

  8. Close the SUPERAntiSpyware Control Center by clicking on the X in the upper-right corner.    Back to menu


How to Run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

To run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, do the following:

  1. Open SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition;

  2. In the little SUPERAntiSpyware Update dialogue box, that appears in the lower-right corner, click on the link Continue what I was doing and Download Later (definition updates are important, but the other link there may not work, and there's another way to check for updates; see just below);

  3. In the main program window, click on the Check for Updates button;

  4. If an update was available, after the update completes, click on the Close button in the SUPERAntiSpyware Definitions Updated dialogue box;

  5. Click on the Scan your Computer button;

  6. Put a checkmark in the box next to the C drive;

  7. Put a checkmark in the box next to the D drive;

  8. In the right pane, select Perform Complete Scan;

  9. Click on the Next button;

  10. When the scan is complete, you'll get a dialogue box entitled SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Summary;

  11. Click on the the OK button in that dialogue box;

  12. If you don't see a SUPERAntiSpyware dialogue box, it's probably minimized; restore the program by clicking on the SUPERAntiSpyware button down on your taskbar;

    Here are some clarifications about the options in the dialogue box with the message SUPERAntiSpyware has detected the following items on your computer:

    • If you want to, you can click on the plus sign next to any detected items to see sub items;

    • By default, all the detected items are checkmarked. If you click on the Next button with all the items checkmarked, all of the items will be quarantined;

    • In this dialogue box, the word remove means "remove to quarantine" -- not "remove permanently from your computer."

    • Once you click on the Next button, you will no longer be able to take any of the other actions in this dialogue box -- actions represented by the buttons in the right column.

  13. Checkmark any items on which you want to take an action represented by a button in the right column, and click on the appropriate button;

  14. Checkmark any items that you want to quarantine, and click on the Next button;

  15. Click on the OK button in the dialogue box that you get when the scan is completed;

  16. Click on the Finish button;

  17. Click on the Manage Quarantine button;

  18. If you're not sure whether you should permanently remove certain quarantined items, just leave leave them in quarantine until you can find out about them.

  19. If you're sure that you want to permanently remove certain quarantined items, do the following:

    1. Click on the items to highlight them;

    2. Click on the Remove button;

    3. When you're asked to confirm your decision, click on the Yes button;

  20. Click on the Close button.    Back to menu
