How to Make a ZIP File in Windows XP or Vista

In Windows XP and Vista, you can make a ZIP file without additional software.

To make a ZIP file in Windows XP, do the following:

  1. Right click on a file(s) or folder(s) that you want to zip;
  2. Go to Send to;
  3. Click on Compressed (zipped) Folder;

The ZIP file will now be in the same folder that contains the file or folder that you zipped. Look for the ZIP file at the bottom of the list of folders. The ZIP file is a yellow folder with a zipper on it with the same name as the file or folder that you zipped but with a .zip extension.

If you're in Windows Explorer, you may not be able to in the left pane of Windows Explorer. To see the ZIP file in Windows Explorer, do the following:

  1. Click on the folder in the left pane that contains the file or folder that you zipped;
  2. Look for the ZIP file at the bottom of the files and folders in the right pane.
